| Video: Drunken Sailor: A Sea Chantey Fantasy (YouTube collaboration) *WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY* "Drunken Sailor" is a collaboration between YouTubers on the well-known sea chantey (shanty). It is a dream-like impression of the chanteys that go rattling around in my brain all day since starting a project to record a vast series of them. Always looking to engage with other people and to spread the joys of simple singing, I had the idea to reach out to others across the netscape through the common ground of this familiar song. Several YouTubers graciously answered my call for submissions, and after passing through my eccentric hands, this is the sometimes-dissonant, often-surreal, always-fun result! It was a pleasure to hear everyone's varied interpretations. "Drunken Sailor" is a chantey of the "stamp 'n' go" or "walkaway" variety, one of the few done for *lighter* work that involved lots of walking. Because of this, not only was it was sung faster than most chanteys, its structure is less of a call-and-response and more of a "sing-along." The tune is also somewhat odd for a chantey, being more of an Irish instrumental dance tune. (It being so well known by even people unfamiliar with many chanteys, the general public's impression of the nature of chanteys has perhaps been skewed by it.) The song dates back to before 1839. The lyrics refer to the days of harsh penalties for neglecting ones duties aboard ship.
