There is no stronger driving force in spirituality that compassion. Instead of being a power play, as charity, compassion is a self-less act. As such, it points toward the fact that our "self" is a false collage of pasted experiences and memories from which we get a whole, permanent, solid, IDEA of who we are. This is the origin of human suffering and dispair. Once thsi chain is broken and we realize that it is false, then we can proceed to build a new self based on the open, free, and the wide-as-the-sky, quality of our true Self.
Then we can be compassionate and see the suffering of others as our own suffering. The observer and the sufferer can the become ONE. Even if we canīt do anything to save the sufferer, we have become one with him/her.
After taht, we can find out that there is no suffering. Without a self no one can suffer because it is the self"ish" self that suffers.
Suffering is an illusion that arises from wanting what we cannot have: health, money, happiness, joy, a partner, etc.
Not having these things is a trigger to unhappiness and we feel that we have missed out on something.
