Dominican "curanderos"The word "curandero" is drived from "curar", which means to cure or heal. They are a derivation of the Haitian "Hungan" or witch doctor, Dominican style. This is a widespread religious belief system that is found "underground" in much of the Dominican Republic. Underground, because the believers knew that the Church frowned on the activity and so they protected themselves by naming their deities with the names of the saints in the Catholic pantheon. Behind it, though, they are the African divinities brought from Dahomey. There are in Santo Domingo many temples dedicated to this practice especially in the uptown barrios. I have seen ceremonies in places with seven individual altars through which the spirits enter the "horses", or people who incorporate them. Folks go there to be healed of many illnesses for which they have to pay a modest fee. |
