Santeria and voodooPrevalent in the Caribbean is a strain of African derived religious and semi-religious faiths and beliefs. Toiday these are called santeria and voodoo. The originals came from the Dahomey area where the basis for religion was nature and ancestor worship. All things in nature had a speiritual identity aside from the aspect presented to us. So spirits hid in them and appeared or manifested at certain times. These apparitions were "good" or "bad", according to the time they happened. If it was full moon, then certain spirits had nasty intentions. These beliefs spread among the Caribbean islands and are present today in many countries. The most interesting aspect of this is that the belifs integrated with Catholicism and put on the cloak of the official religion. A sort of make believe to avoid witch hunts. Cheers! |
